Re-chroming is worth it when a hydraulic cylinder rod has surface damage such as pitting, light scoring or worn plating but is still straight and structurally sound. The old chrome is stripped, the rod is ground back to a clean base, hard chrome is plated on and the rod is finished to the original size. If the rod is bent, deeply corroded or already ground undersize, replacement is the safer choice.

What hard chrome plating does for a piston rod

The chrome layer on a piston rod is the surface the rod seals ride on every stroke. It must be hard, smooth and corrosion resistant. When that surface is damaged, seals wear quickly, oil leaks past the gland and dirt is dragged into the cylinder.

Hard chrome plating restores that working surface, so the cylinder can often return to service without replacing the whole rod.

Signs your rod needs attention

  • Oil film or drips at the gland that return after fitting new seals.
  • Pitting or rust spots, especially on rods that sit extended in damp conditions.
  • Scratches or scoring you can feel with a fingernail.
  • Flaking or peeling chrome.
  • Seals that wear out much faster than they should.

How the re-chroming process works

  • Inspection: the rod is cleaned and checked for straightness, depth of damage and remaining material.
  • Stripping: the old chrome and damaged layer are removed.
  • Grinding: the rod is ground back to a clean, true surface.
  • Plating: fresh hard chrome is deposited on the rod.
  • Finishing: the rod is ground and polished to the specified diameter and surface finish, then re-checked before the cylinder is rebuilt with a new seal kit.

When re-chroming is the right call

  • Pitting or scoring that does not go deep into the base metal.
  • Worn or flaking plating on an otherwise straight rod.
  • Large or long rods, where a new rod would cost much more and take longer.
  • Cylinders that are otherwise sound, with a good barrel and piston.

When to replace the rod instead

  • The rod is bent or cracked.
  • Corrosion is deep enough that grinding would leave the rod too thin.
  • The rod has already been reground and has no material left to work with.
  • The attached ends, threads or welds are damaged beyond repair.

How to protect rods after the repair

  • Fit and replace wiper seals so dirt does not scrape the chrome.
  • Keep rods retracted or covered when machines are idle in damp, coastal or dusty conditions.
  • Avoid knocks from rock, tools and loading equipment.
  • Keep hydraulic oil clean, because contamination scores a rod from the inside out.

Rod repair at Teknik

Our machining services include shaft reconditioning, cylinder honing, hard chrome plating and radial drilling, with shafts up to 18 metres and honing up to 15 metres. If you are not sure whether to repair or replace the whole cylinder, read our guide on hydraulic cylinder repair vs replacement.

Contractors in the Mumbai region can use our Mumbai hydraulic cylinder services page, and Karnataka customers can use our Bangalore services page. Send photos of the rod and the machine details for an estimate.

Frequently asked questions

Can a pitted hydraulic cylinder rod be repaired?

Often yes. If the pitting is not too deep and the rod is straight, it can be stripped, ground and re-chromed. Deep pitting or a bent rod usually means replacement.

Why do new seals fail quickly on a damaged rod?

A rough or pitted chrome surface wears the seal lips and lets oil and dirt pass. Fitting new seals without fixing the rod surface rarely lasts.

What should I send for a rod repair estimate?

Send the machine make and model, the cylinder position, clear photos of the rod damage, the rod diameter and stroke if known, and your site location.
